Montgomery County, Maryland Approves Homosexual Sex Education Class

The board of education for Montgomery County, Maryland, approved a new sex-education curriculum that includes lessons about what it means to be gay or lesbian. The final lesson plan, designed for the eighth and 10th grades, says little about how people become gay, resisting pressure from a divided community to define homosexuality as nature or nurture, right or wrong.

MD Gays and Lesbians: Marriage Ban has 'No Constitutionally Sufficient Justification'

An attorney representing 19 Maryland gays and lesbians urged the state's highest court Monday to repeal a ban on same-sex marriage, saying it carries 'no constitutionally sufficient justification.' Nine same-sex couples and a gay man whose partner is dead filed a lawsuit in 2004 against court clerks who denied their applications for marriage licenses.

Ministry Guidelines for Gay Catholics Awaits Blessing from Bishops

America's Roman Catholic bishops may approve new guidelines this week that would absolve gay Catholics of any obligation to try to alter their sexual orientation. The guidelines for ministering to homosexuals, to be reviewed by bishops in Baltimore at their annual fall meeting, also will urge clergy to baptize the adopted children of same-sex couples.

The nation's Roman Catholic bishops said this week that new guidelines for ministry to gays are being developed that will reaffirm church opposition to same-sex marriage and adoption by the couples, while condemning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Maryland High Court To Review Gay Marriage Ban

Maryland’s highest court announced this week it will review a lower court’s ruling that a 1973 state law limiting marriage to heterosexuals is unconstitutional. Late last month, the Maryland Court of Appeals accepted the case as part of its fall term. The court’s seven judges will hear oral arguments in December. The Maryland Court of Appeals announced its decision to hear the case the same day the high court in Washington State upheld the Defense of Marriage Act.
